What’s Up at Walsh: Exciting Spring 2025 Events at the Walsh Library

By Hannah Herrlich, Emerging Technologies Librarian

The Spring 2025 semester is here, and the Walsh Library Reference Department is ready to bring you some exciting and informative events to help you make the most of your library experience. Whether you’re looking for a quiet space to read, need help with citations, or want to sign up for a New York Public Library card, we’ve got something for everyone this semester. Check out the details for these fun and engaging upcoming events.

Silent Book Club

Upcoming Date: April 30th

If you love reading but often find it hard to carve out time, Silent Book Club is the perfect solution. The Silent Book Club is an event where members of the Fordham community gather together and read. There are no assigned books, no discussion groups, and no homework. It’s simply an opportunity to read by yourself, surrounded by the company of others doing the same. Expect a group of enthusiastic readers and minimal conversation. Bring your latest read, no matter the genre, and you’re all set. Nothing to read at the moment? Fortunately, this club meets in a library, where there are plenty (millions) of books to choose from; plus, we’ll have a selection of pulled books readily available. Silent Book Club meets throughout the semester in the Atlas Area at the far back corner of the Walsh Reference Room (if you have trouble finding it, ask for assistance at the Reference desk). Ultimately, this is a chance to sit back, relax, and read in peace among fellow book lovers. No need to speak—just bring a book, find a cozy spot, and enjoy some quiet reading time.

NYPL Card Sign Up

Upcoming Date: April 8th (AKA TODAY)

How does the age-old saying go? “When you’re part of the Fordham community, no need to go to an NYPL branch for a library card, because NYPL will come to you?” And if that’s not an age-old saying, then it should be! There are multiple opportunities throughout the semester- to stop by the Walsh Library and sign up for a free NYPL card. NYPL card holders can borrow items from any NYPL location, access databases and specialized resources, and get free passes to local museums, among other benefits. NYPL access is a great supplement to the resources available through Fordham University Libraries. This event is perfect for those who want to expand their library access and take advantage of the NYPL’s incredible offerings.

Citation Station

Upcoming Date: April 28th

Struggling with citations? You’re not alone! Join us at Citation Station, where the Walsh Reference Department will be on hand to help you navigate citation styles, from MLA to APA to Chicago and more. Whether you need assistance formatting your references or understanding citation guidelines, this event is your go-to resource for citation help. Bring your assignment or just pop by with your questions, our experts will guide you through the process.

Shut Up & Write!

Upcoming Dates: April 14th & 29th

Sometimes, the hardest part of writing is just sitting down and doing it. That’s where Shut Up & Write comes in– an event where members of the Fordham community gather and focus on writing. The writing can be of any genre, including academic, creative, professional, or personal. Each person works on their own writing in the company of others. It is not a writing workshop or critique space. It can be a useful group for people who want accountability in their writing practice. Each Shut Up & Write runs for one hour and follows the same simple structure: Five-minutes of introductions, followed by 50-minutes of writing, and ending with five-minutes for conclusions. At the end of the session, you will have the option to share what you’ve accomplished with your fellow writers, but this will never be required, and these sessions will not be used for workshopping or peer editing.

These events are a great way to connect with other members of the Fordham community, improve your academic skills, and take a break from your regular routine. Keep an eye on What’s Up at Walsh? research guide for specific dates and additional details.

We can’t wait to see you at these exciting events—see you soon at Walsh!
