Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865 when Union Army General Granger issued General Order No. 3, relaying the news of the Emancipation Proclamation. This announcement came more than a month after the official end of the Civil War and over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

To commemorate Juneteenth, this post features a selection of resources highlighting music, first-person accounts from former enslaved individuals, and the gradual abolition of slavery in New York State.
